ABOUT

Osteopath Rose with skeleton friend

My journey to osteopathy has been surriptiously convoluted. From a young age I knew I wanted to have a career where I worked one on one with others, I would only need my hands, and something that I could travel with. Initially, I considered nursing and midwifery. In the UK, this is under the NHS (National Health System) which has a very allopathic outlook. Our parents raised my brother, sister and I using alternative practises alongside our Steiner education - homeopathy, osteopathy, astrology and natures rhythms. And so I needed a career that would support my ingrained holistic outlook of life.

When I first visited the grand mansion of the European School of Osteopathy (ESO) in Kent, England, surrounded by the fields with spring lambs in, the Boxley woods and the collaborativeness of the teaching I knew I had found the profession I wanted to be a part of. After three gap years, five continents and eleven countries explored and worked in, I was ready to study!

The ESO gave me a solid foundation of the original osteopathic teachings and principles, with trainings in the spectrum of cranial, visceral, and structural osteopathy. I believe the techniques you use does not specify what type of osteopath you are. We have a huge toolbox of techniques and use the ones most appropriate to the patient and what they are presenting with. Dependent on body type, injury, quality of the nervous system, ability of the vascular systems and so on. That is one of the reasons I enjoy this profession, each patient brings their personal world with them. And it is up to the osteopath to approach them holistically, considering all the unique variations of their system.

ABOUT

Professional development

Part of being an osteopath is the continual upskilling and staying current with the latest evidence releases. Here I will cover areas of further training and my scope of practise.

Womens Health - pelvic and abdominal organs

In August 2023 I attended a Womens Health Visceral course in London. This built on my palpation and assessment skills of abdominal and pelvic organs. And specific conditions related to them such as C-section scarring, rectus diastasis (stomach muscle seperation), and breathing issues. The course covered specific techniques for treating a range of women’s health issues, such as endometriosis, pelvic pain, and bladder dysfunction.

Retained Reflexes and Neurodevelopmental Delay

In 2024, I attended Jamie Taylor's Retained Reflexes and Neurodevelopmental Delay coursewhere we learned how to examine, test and treat retained reflexes. We are born with these are reflexes to assist the birthing process. By 3 months of age usually they become integrated. When this doesn't happen, the child can develop neurodevelopmental delay because of all the chatter the reflexes create in the brainstem altering auditory, visual and propriocetive (balance) feedback systems. Children may be more fidgety, less attentive, have 'ants in their pants', lack hand eye coordination, trip and fall over more often, are bedwetters. This can be linked to neurodiverse individuals with ADHD, autistic spectrum disorder and neurodiversity. Manual therapy and specific exercises destimulate the reflexes and integrate them into the individual.

Working Alongside A Paediatric Specialist Osteopath

I spent a wonderful six months working with osteopath Jamie Taylor in the beautiful Manawatu. I saw many babies and maternity patients. Jamie is known as the 'baby whisperer' due to his ability to soothe any child! Hands on learning with Jamie and working with his specific guidance led to me being capable of treating many disorders that babies and children present to clinic with. Including but not limited to tongue tie, latching and feeding difficulties, constipation and digestive issues, head turn preference, unsettledness and incessant crying. Parents were given simple carrying, soothing and feeding holds, and lots of reassurance that they were good parents!
